I Am Mordred is a short sad novel with a sympathetic anti-hero. Can Mordred find love? Can he defy his fate, or is he destined to fulfill it?

HeÃ‚Âƒ?s a sensitive child who just wants to be loved and accepted by his scheming mother and the kind father who refuses to acknowledge him as son. Now he lives with a cold mother, a heavy burden (Merlin has publicly prophesied that Mordred will kill King Arthur) and a huge helping of guilt (King Arthur killed all the babies in the realm when he found out about MordredÃ‚Âƒ?s birth).īut Mordred doesnÃ‚Âƒ?t want to kill anybody. His life changes when heÃ‚Âƒ?s discovered and taken away. When we meet Mordred heÃ‚Âƒ?s a happy child being raised in a loving home by hard-working fisherfolk. In her novel I Am Mordred, Nancy Springer flips the legend, brings the traitorous Mordred to tragic life, and makes him easy to sympathize with. Or maybe we just donÃ‚Âƒ?t like reading about people who are hard to root for. Maybe itÃ‚Âƒ?s that Mordred isnÃ‚Âƒ?t very romantic. Why does Mordred, the man who eventually brings down the whole shebang, get such short shrift? Thereƒ?s plenty of source material, most notably Geoffrey of MonmouthÃ‚Âƒ?s Historia Regum Britanniae and Thomas MaloryÃ‚Âƒ?s Le Morte dÃ‚Âƒ?Arthur. It's a very easy read as the writing style is very lyrical and I hope to read more by Springer in the future.Almost all the modern stories derived from Arthurian legends focus on King Arthur, Queen Guinevere, Sir Lancelot, Sir Gawain, and Merlin. The addition of more fey and fairy tale elements fit in really well and made it a little different from other re-tellings. She has fallen in love with Thomas, but he is fated to die in battle which Morgan hopres to prevent.I enjoyed this short tale and liked the addition of Thomas, their nurse and the Master of the Hunt. She meets more of the fey, goddesses and the Master of the Hunt.

After Morgan recieves a sending (a type of dream/vision) she knows she must journey to Avalon to further her magical training. They also have help and company from a young man named Thomas whose story contains references to True Thomas from fairy tale. Igraine and Uther marry soon after and when he dies Morgan, her sister Morgause and their nurse flee Tintagel before they are killed by those looking to get rid of the heirs.On the journey they discover their nurse is more than she seems. As a young girl she has always been different with her mis-matched fey eyes and she sees Uther the night he visits her mother to concieve Arthur in disguise. It tells the Arthurian myths from a different perspective and how she becomes the nemesis of King Arthur. A tale of Morgan Le Fey as a young child growing in to maturity.
